Kolkata Police have arrested Pune-based law student Sharmistha Panoli from Gurugram in connection with a controversial video she posted on social media that allegedly hurt religious sentiments. The arrest was carried out following an FIR registered at Garden Reach police station in Kolkata, based on complaints about objectionable and derogatory comments made in the video targeting a particular religion. A court-issued arrest warrant facilitated the police action.
Sharmistha Panoli, a resident of Anandapur in Kolkata, had uploaded the video on Instagram. After the video went viral, the police registered a case and began an investigation. Following her arrest, Panoli was brought to Kolkata on transit remand and presented before the Alipore court. The court has sent her to police custody for further questioning regarding the case.
Police officials stated that after posting the video, Panoli and her family went missing, which delayed serving her a legal notice. The investigation remains ongoing as the police continue to gather evidence related to the incident. Panoli’s custody will enable the authorities to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter.
